AWE has continued its support to one of its charities of the year – with a donation household and kitchen equipment to Children 1st West Berkshire which provides a vital stepping stone for those leaving foster care.
The charity, which is also referred to as Cornerstone, after the name of the house where the young adults are based, issued a plea for additional items to help with cookery lessons for the residents.
AWE staff rallied to the call, providing a couple of microwaves, baking equipment and utensils, cutlery, crockery and much more.
The aim of the home, which can house up to four young adults at a time, is to bridge the gap between officially leaving care and taking the daunting step of achieving independence and self-sufficiency.
The residents are aged between 16-21 years old when they arrive, and the house not only provides a roof over their heads and a safe environment, but also gives them the opportunity to acquire essential life skills including: social skills, learning how to cook and organise their time, and how to budget on a set income.
Julie Barclay Clark, one of the charity’s trustees, said: “Cornerstone is very grateful for all the support we are receiving from AWE. Teaching our young people to cook is an essential skill, especially with our end goal of independent living.”
Michele Maidment, AWE’s Community Committee secretary, said: “We’re delighted to be able to continue helping Cornerstone in this way, and being able to meet the residents who depend on it really shows the direct benefit that the charity provides.”
