AWE has given £1,000 to a local charity which provides a holiday away from home for those who are ill.
On Monday 28th January AWE’s Community Committee presented £1,000 to Sebastian’s Action Trust at The Bluebells in North Waltham, near Basingstoke.
The charity aims to provide holidays in the only purpose-built holiday house in the UK for seriously ill children and their families.
The charity is named after nine-year-old Sebastian Gates who died in 2003 from a rare childhood cancer. It was his wish to establish a holiday home that would provide a place exclusively for families to spend time together, away from the punishing routines that cancer patients must undergo. Sebastian wanted the holiday house to be available all year and offer breaks free of charge to families with sick youngsters.
AWE's Clive Athawes Trials Engineer, said: “Having recently raised funds for this unique facility in my own time I was more than happy to nominate them to receive this donation from AWE and was exceptionally pleased to hear that they had been selected to receive it. I felt very privileged to be able to present the cheque on behalf of the company knowing that it will benefit those families most deserving of a holiday in this fantastic purpose built facility.”
AWE's Jemma Gideon Facility Engineer, said “My little boy has Diplegic Cerebral Palsy and we feel very fortunate that we have been able to stay at the holiday home and use their facilities, so I can say from experience that is a brilliant place to stay and really benefitted my family as a whole. I was very pleased to be able to nominate the charity and delighted that they have received a donation from AWE ."
Debbie Loveridge, Community Fundraiser said: “We are really thrilled that Clive and Gemma nominated us for this grant. It is fantastic to have the support of local companies and we’d like to thank AWE for this generous donation. Although are only a small charity, our work does make a significant difference to those who face an uncertain future.”
AWE Community Committee secretary, Michele Maidment said: “This is an amazing facility and we’re delighted to be able to help in this way. This is a great, new charity that supports children and their families who need the benefit of a break, but in a secure, stress-free but fun environment.”
