AWE recently hosted a team of pupils from St Bartholomew’s School, in Newbury, following their win last year in the A-Level Science Challenge.
The science challenge is a single day event where teams of students from local schools compete in various challenges designed by AWE’s graduate team. In the 2012 competition there were nine competing schools, and St Bartholomew’s School consistently scored highly.
Their prize for winning included a tour of Orion, our new laser facility. All of the students were full of praise for the facility, commenting on how impressive and interesting they found it, as was their teacher, Dr Richard Costambeys.
He said: “The students really enjoyed the visit. They found it very interesting and I think that it was good for them to find out how cutting edge physics really works.”
John Ansell, AWE’s schools liaison representative for St Bartholomew’s School commented afterwards: “The students really enjoyed the trip around the Orion facility.
“They found it intriguing to see the size of the facility and amount of engineering required in order to support the scientific research. Discussions with scientific experts opened their eyes to the fact that addressing scientific problems often results in further questions rather than definitive solutions.”
Phil Powner, one of the organising graduate team: “It was great being able to show the winning team around Orion. We have a fantastic facility that will hopefully have inspired these six students to pursue a career in science and technology.”
