AWE supports Tadley and District Royal British Legion

Members of the Tadley and District Royal British Legion are celebrating after receiving a donation of £1,000 from AWE’s Community Committee.

The Tadley branch is well known locally as it has a staunch presence at many regular events, such as the Tadley Treacle Fayre.

There are approximately 45 members, who are dedicated to raising the profile of the group, and increasing membership as well as raising more funds for the Poppy Appeal.

Each year in the run up to Remembrance Sunday there is a display in the foyer of Sainsbury’s in Tadley, with a large range of merchandise on offer. House to house, and box, collections help drum up additional support and money.

AWE’s Sandi Langer, who is also the branch’s Poppy Appeal organiser, said: “At last year’s national conference we were awarded the accolade of runner up in the best small branch and at our county conference we were the winners in the same category.

“We are delighted with the donation from the community committee as it takes the total raised to just over £22,700 for the Poppy Appeal.”

Michele Maidment, secretary of AWE’s Community Committee said: “We’re very pleased to be able to help out the local branch in this way. Many people who work here have strong connections to the armed forces, and the Poppy Appeal is something where people can demonstrate support very easily.”

Notes to Editors

1.     AWE plays a crucial role in national defence by providing and maintaining warheads for Trident, the UK's nuclear deterrent.

2.     AWE is contracted to the Ministry of Defence (MOD) through a Government-owned Contractor Operated (GOCO) arrangement. Whilst our sites and facilities remain in government ownership, their management, day to day operations, and the maintenance of the nuclear stockpile is contracted to a private company AWE Management Limited (AWE ML). AWE ML is a consortium comprising three equal partners: Serco Group plc, the Lockheed Martin Corporation and Jacobs Engineering Group.
