AWE helps Hampshire and Berkshire schools with new books

Youngsters  in schools across Hampshire and Berkshire have been able to furnish their new library with up to date science books thanks to AWE.

AWE has run its successful Books for Schools scheme since 2005 and any school registered on the scheme can apply for a £200 share of £5000

The money is given on a first come first served basis and can be spent on books, CDs, supporting computer software.

Alexandra Butler, Executive Headteacher of both Hampstead Norreys CofE Primary School and The Willows Primary School said: “We are very pleased to have received the grant towards science books. Science is a very important part of our pupils' learning and as a result we try to keep our science learning resources up to date and in plentiful supply. This very generous donation enables us to have some of the most recent publications, so thank you.”

The schools liaison committee consists of AWE staff who have links with local schools – and there are now about 90 schools on the scheme.

Schools Liaison spokesperson Michele Maidment said: “AWE is delighted to help our neighbouring schools in this way, and support them in developing their resources in science and technology.”

Other schools which received a donation included: Kendrick School, in Reading; Hampstead Norreys CofE Primary School, Thatcham; Burghfield St Mary’s Primary School; Burghfield; Bishopswood Junior School, Tadley; Pangbourne Primary School, Reading; and Kempshott Junior School, Basingstoke. In all, 25 schools received a donation.

Notes to Editors

1.     AWE plays a crucial role in national defence by providing and maintaining warheads for Trident, the UK's nuclear deterrent.

2.     AWE is contracted to the Ministry of Defence (MOD) through a Government-owned Contractor Operated (GOCO) arrangement. Whilst our sites and facilities remain in government ownership, their management, day to day operations, and the maintenance of the nuclear stockpile is contracted to a private company AWE Management Limited (AWE ML). AWE ML is a consortium comprising three equal partners: Serco Group plc, the Lockheed Martin Corporation and Jacobs Engineering Group.
