AWE announces the award of an Intellectual Property licence to Lab Impex Systems Ltd

AWE and Lab Impex Systems have teamed up once more to announce a further Intellectual Property licence deal which will see the commercial launch of a new Criticality Incident Detection System (CIDS).

A criticality incident is defined as an unintentional or accidental occurrence of nuclear fission, due to either engineering controls or operational procedures failing. CIDS provides mitigation, within this field, by detecting and monitoring for such events. As a requirement of the ONR Nuclear Licence, AWE continuously monitors for the unlikely occurrence of criticality so that such events can be safely and securely mitigated.

This licence follows on from the deal struck two years ago, which saw the companies join forces to announce an intellectual property licence deal for the launch of new equipment designed for monitoring radioactive particles in the air.

AWE’s Managing Director, Andrew Jupp, said: “At AWE we are continually striving to enhance our world-class safety, security and environmental standards.

“I am really passionate about AWE delivering innovative high performance through our excellent people and technologies and exploiting wider opportunities as they present themselves.

“This new system further improves on the already high performance of its predecessor by enhancing reliability and minimising false alarms to a level even lower than previously achieved within the nuclear industry.

“Working in partnership with Lab Impex Systems, these licensing agreements have been mutually beneficial, via the provision of COTS solutions, and this further licence is a clear demonstration of our strong working relationship. Innovations such as these demonstrate how we continue to be at the forefront of technology development. These latest developments significantly increase the performance of the CIDS thus safeguarding the health and safety of our people, the community and the environment which is at the heart of everything we do.”

Bruce Morris, Chairman of Lab Impex Systems, said: “This is a strategic step for both companies; we at Lab Impex Systems are very excited by the opportunity of working closely with the AWE innovation team on this project. Lab Impex Systems and AWE experiences bring detailed knowledge and understanding of applications in this field reinforcing both design teams.

“This has been amply demonstrated in the success to date of the previous licence related to the Lab Impex Systems/AWE SigmaCAM project. We are confident that the AWE innovation will be commercially successful worldwide, building on our achievements in international sales to date.

“This agreement is seen by both parties as very significant and is also in sync with Lab Impex Systems’ on going efforts to effectively contribute to the safety requirements of Nuclear facilities, in the UK and internationally.”
