The MOD has today published a provisional short list of sites that may be suitable for the safe storage of Intermediate Level Waste from dismantled submarines until it can be disposed of in the UK’s planned Geological Disposal Facility.
The MOD sites at AWE Aldermaston and AWE Burghfield are both named on that list.
The MOD will now enter into pre-engagement with local authorities, elected representatives, and established site stake holder groups.
The pre-engagement will seek views on the criteria that should be considered during the main assessment of shortlisted sites and to help shape the forthcoming public consultation.
A public consultation on the possible sites will start towards the end of this year and no decisions will be made until this process is completed.
Further information on the Submarine Dismantling Project and a copy of the MOD’s criteria and Screening Report, which contains information on how the provisional shortlist was arrived at, can be found at https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/submarine-dismantling-project-interim-storage-of-intermediate-level-radioactive-waste.
