Schools from across Hampshire and Berkshire attended the 2014 AWE Girls in Engineering Challenge.
The event on March 19th forms part of AWE's commitment to encourage girls into a career in science, technology, engineering and mathematics. DATE
Pupils from seven schools including Park House School, Kennet School, Denefield School, The Willink School, The Costello School, Robert May's School and The Hurst Community College took part in the annual event which is planned and delivered by apprentices from the AWE Skills Academy.
AWE apprentices designed three challenges, these included a marble run, tower build and egg catch. Each test was designed to assess engineering know-how.
AWE Apprentice Sammy McRae said: "A lot of hard work went into organising the event but it certainly paid off when we saw the smiles on the girl's faces and heard their comments about how much they enjoyed the day, it makes it all worth while. I and my team thoroughly enjoyed ourselves hosting this event and hope we demonstrated to the pupils that engineering is an exciting and interesting career path to follow."
AWE Head of Nuclear Analytical Science, Sian Butler, was on hand on the day to help motivate the pupils. During the prize giving, she said: "One of the aims of today is to challenge the stereotypical view of engineering and see this as a forward-facing career that is open to all. The young men and women we have here from AWE's apprenticeship scheme display such enthusiasm and energy - they really are excellent role models for you. As a scientist I would encourage you to see careers in STEM subjects as exciting opportunities that will shape the future."
After a day of stiff competition, pupils from Robert May's School clinched the overall first prize of best school.
Philip Cain head of technology at Robert May's School said: "This was our first time attending this event and I think it was fantastic. It was particularly refreshing to see an event that motivated girls in STEM. I wish there were more events like this."
Robert May's School pupil, Lydia Fellows aged 12 said: "I really enjoyed the event it made me more excited for engineering and made me realise that girls can enjoy it."
Ella Stevenson aged 13 said: "I loved working as a team and learning new skills."
