Andrew Jupp steps down as Managing Director

AWE today announces Dr. Andrew Jupp is stepping down as Managing Director after a career with the organisation that has spanned nearly 30 years including nine as a member of the Executive leadership team and four as its Managing Director.

Andrew has been part of discussions with AWE ML Board reviewing the future leadership and direction of the organisation and believes the time is right to make way for a new appointee to lead AWE through the next phase of change.

Under Andrew Jupp’s stewardship AWE has achieved a number of important milestones including the successful negotiation of the current MoD contract pricing period, the creation of the ABL alliance to sustain and develop the existing expertise at Coulport, a stronger profile and reputation across the wider defence nuclear enterprise and significant growth in the highly regarded Skills Academy and Graduate Programme, championed by his personal passion for investing in scientific, engineering and technical talent.

John McLachlan, Chairman AWE ML, said: “Andrew’s passion and commitment to the organisation and its mission has been unwavering from his first appointment as a Health Physicist in 1985. Andrew embodied the behaviours that underpin AWE’s values and ethics today, including those of safety and security of all employees and the local community. We wish him well and hope he will continue to support our mission and maintain the friendships he has established over his time with AWE”.

Andrew Jupp added: “It has been a privilege and honour to have been part of AWE and to have worked with so many great people on a truly important mission and programme. I would like to thank you all for your dedication, commitment and support over the past years. I wish each of you and the whole of AWE the best for the future”.

Whilst the search for Andrew’s successor is underway Rob Fletcher, previously Director, Commercial, is appointed Acting Managing Director.

Notes to Editors:

  1. AWE plays a crucial role in national defence by providing and maintaining warheads for Trident, the UK’s nuclear deterrent
  2. AWE is contracted to the Ministry of Defence (MOD) through a Government-owned Contractor Operated (GOCO) arrangement. Whilst our sites and facilities remain in government ownership, their management, day to day operations, and the maintenance of the nuclear stockpile is contracted to a private company AWE Management Limited (AWE ML). AWE ML is a consortium comprising three equal partners: Serco Group plc, the Lockheed Martin Corporation and Jacobs Engineering Group.
