AWE today (July 16) welcomes publication of the 2014 CNI statement and the Office for Nuclear Regulation’s (ONR) assessment that AWE meets safety standards required to protect the public and its workforce.
Delivering safe and secure operations is a core priority for AWE and it fully supports the ONR’s focus on continuous improvement, effective hazard control and maintaining high standards.
AWE is pleased that the ONR has deemed the Burghfield site to be at a routine level of regulatory attention and acknowledged Aldermaston continues at an enhanced level.
In response to the CNI report Paul Rees, head of environment safety and health, said: “AWE’s major investment programme includes replacement of existing facilities to maintain capability and tackling nuclear legacy through maintenance and decommissioning. Our programme is one of the largest and most complex in the UK defence industry with many of our new designs setting the blueprint for future nuclear structures. Given the complexity and uniqueness of some of the challenges associated with these projects the priority two rating is appropriate.”
AWE continues to work with the ONR on managing its radioactive waste in a safe manner. We continuously work to further improve our environmental performance in all aspects of our operations and processes.
A number of activities are underway to improve the quality of our safety cases and the standard and timelessness of delivery of periodic reviews.
In addition, the ONR has acknowledged that all fire detection systems at AWE site’s are now fully functional following issues identified by the company earlier in the year.
A mid to longer term plan for ensuring the adequate and effective maintenance and operation of fire detections systems has been agreed with the ONR.
AWE continues to work closely with ONR and all other regulators to ensure it ultimately delivers fully functional world class facilities that will enhance the safe capability of the UK Nuclear deterrent.

Notes to Editors:
1. AWE plays a crucial role in national defence by providing and maintaining warheads for Trident, the UK’s nuclear deterrent.
2. AWE is contracted to the Ministry of Defence (MOD) through a Government-owned Contractor Operated (GOCO) arrangement. Whilst our sites and facilities remain in government ownership, their management, day to day operations, and the maintenance of the nuclear stockpile is contracted to a private company AWE Management Limited (AWE ML). AWE ML is a consortium comprising three equal partners: Serco Group plc, the Lockheed Martin Corporation and Jacobs Engineering Group.
