AWE Plc Managing Director appointed

The AWE ML Board is delighted to announce the appointment of Kevin Bilger as Managing Director, AWE Plc.

Kevin joins the organisation from Lockheed Martin (LM), where he was most recently Vice President, Programmes and Quality for Space Systems Company. In this role, Kevin has been responsible for programme management, programme planning, supply chain management and quality assurance across a broad portfolio of space and missile systems business.

His association with LM spans over 30 years, spending his early career in satellite design engineering for U.S. national security, civil and commercial space systems. Kevin has held key executive positions with LM Space Systems Company. He was previously Vice President and General Manager of Global Communications Systems. Other key Vice President assignments included programme management, supply chain and product management, military space programmes and engineering.

Kevin Bilger added: “I am honoured to join this exceptional organisation and look forward to continuing the high standard of innovative scientific research, engineering and associated production to ensure an effective UK nuclear deterrent.”

Commenting on this key appointment, John McLachlan, Chairman of AWE ML said: “Kevin has been central to shaping Lockheed Martin’s Space System Company future with a focus on instituting changes in engineering, manufacturing and business methods that have resulted in significant cycle time reduction, cost savings and extraordinary business results. His depth of sector experience and technical insight is a great match for our organisation. This coupled with his focus on programme performance and quality provides a strong platform to lead AWE Plc through the next phase of change.

“In support of this announcement I am also pleased to announce that Rob Fletcher will become AWE Deputy Managing Director. Rob, who has been Acting Managing Director, assumes this critically important role for the business.”

Notes to Editors:

  1. AWE plays a crucial role in national defence by providing and maintaining warheads for Trident, the UK’s nuclear deterrent.
  2. AWE is contracted to the Ministry of Defence (MOD) through a Government-owned Contractor Operated (GOCO) arrangement. Whilst our sites and facilities remain in government ownership, their management, day to day operations, and the maintenance of the nuclear stockpile is contracted to a private company AWE Management Limited (AWE ML). AWE ML is a consortium comprising three equal partners: Serco Group plc, the Lockheed Martin Corporation and Jacobs Engineering Group.
