AWE staff have donated almost 300 pairs of pre-owned spectacles to help underprivileged communities in India see better.
The collection organised in collaboration with local business Optimum Vision Clinic, supported an Indian charity that helps impoverished communities.
Principal Optometrist Optician Priyanka and a colleague donated their time, professional services and the spectacles to communities in Rajasthan-Jodhpur. AWE is committed to being a good neighbour and working with local businesses in the community.
The donated glasses, over 1000 in total from the local community and those donated by AWE staff, were used to give patients the best possible prescription with the aim of improving their eyesight, giving people of the villages a chance to see; for the first time in some cases. The charity dealt with all ages with different types of vision impairment therefore all sizes of spectacles are welcome.
Priyanka the optometrist at Optimum Vision Clinic said: “It was amazing to see the support AWE, their employees and the patients of OVC have provided by donating old and unwanted frames. My trip to Rajasthan-India has been a truly humbling experience. We saw 986 patients during our time, an experience that will never be forgotten. We worked with children and adults, from the orphanages to rural villages. The value and appreciation of what we did was extremely touching. I would like to thank everyone that has donated their frames, and want you to know that someone is seeing just that little better because of you. The commitment everyone has shown in collecting frames to help deprived people in India has been amazing.”
AWE Employee, Linda Wise who helped organise the collection said: “It was fantastic that so many staff donated. I got to meet people from across the company that I had never spoken to before. It is great that AWE supports and encourages staff to get involved in charitable work.”
