AWE donates £200 to Shopmobility Basingstoke

Tuesday 6 September 2016

Shoppers in Basingstoke are scooting along thanks to a longstanding link between AWE and Shopmobility, helping to maintain the charity’s mobility vehicles. AWE’s Community Committee has donated £200 to Shopmobility in Basingstoke. The money will go towards the maintenance and repair of the mobility scooters used by the charity. Lin Chandler, manager of Shopmobility Basingstoke, said: “AWE has been helping us for 13 years now. The money is very useful, we look after our scooters well and they have regular maintenance. We still have the original scooter donated to us by AWE in 2003 and it is working well.

“We are really pleased that AWE continues to support our work. For people with limited mobility, whatever the reason, having the chance to move around easily, visit friends, enjoy a meal or a drink in the town centre, go shopping and generally make the most of life, is a great boost.

"By providing a wide range of mobility aids, we can really make a difference. Many of our customers are not registered disabled – they could have a long-term illness, be elderly or pregnant, we offer support to everyone who needs help.”

Shopmobility has 42 powered scooters and 35 manual and powered wheelchairs, which are available for hire by local residentsand visitors to improve their access to Basingstoke Town Centre and Festival Place.  The charity also leases the equipment for longer periods for holidays and weekend breaks. It costs just £6.50 to register and then £3.50 per visit. Training is given to first-time users to ensure they are comfortable with using the scooter before they go out.

The AWE Community Committee has supported this important local charity for a number of years and, in addition to contributing towards maintenance costs, has previously purchased two scooters for the charity. AWE is committed to supporting local charities, with donations and sponsorship, as well as offering practical help wherever possible.
