AWE Apprentice programme wins at regional Apprenticeship Awards

AWE has won the south-east Large Employer category in the regional rounds of the prestigious National Apprenticeship Awards 2016.

Kathryn Marshall, AWE’s Director of Human Resources, said: “We are proud and delighted to have won this award and to have national recognition of AWE’s longstanding commitment to excellence in its apprenticeship programme. We have been nurturing and developing young people for nearly 65 years, since our Skills Academy opened its doors. More than 4000 men and women have completed their apprenticeships with us and many have worked their way up through the company into senior leadership roles.

“Apprenticeships are crucial for AWE, not only in supporting our workforce and our business but because they offer people of all ages and backgrounds an opportunity to learn and develop a skill that provides them with real career options. With the government investing £2.5 billion in apprenticeship training, it is clear that developing the nation’s future talent is a high priority and AWE  has never been more committed to providing opportunities for young people and supporting them to achieve their potential.

“In 2017, we are almost tripling the number of apprenticeship places available here and we are introducing four completely new modules - Laboratory Technicians, Health Physics, Process Operators, Technical Authors and Motor Vehicle - to our long-established electrical, engineering and manufacturing programmes. We invest heavily in in the ongoing development of our skilled and diverse workforce to support our future business needs and our highly-valued apprentices make a vital contribution to the delivery of our uniquely demanding technical programme.”

Marcus Hutchings, head of AWE’s Skills Academy, added: “This was a tough category to win, we were up against top national companies who are leaders in their fields and it is a real achievement. I am really proud of our apprentices, whose achievements have underpinned this honour but also thanks are due to our leadership team, whose support has been so essential to our success. Our Chief Executive, Iain Coucher, is a passionate advocate for the benefits that apprenticeships bring, for both individuals and organisations, and we are all excited to be expanding our existing scheme to offer even more outstanding young people a great opportunity for a rewarding career. Our next application process opens in November and you can find out how to apply at www.awe.co.uk.”

The winning regional employers and apprentices were presented with their awards at a ceremony at St Pauls Aldersgate Conference Centre in London on 18 October.  AWE, along with the other regional winners, will go forward to the final of the National Awards in January.

The National Apprenticeship Awards challenge top apprenticeship employers and apprentices across England to show how apprenticeships have made a real difference to their organisation and careers. Run by the National Apprenticeship Service, the awards recognise excellence in businesses that grow their own talent with apprenticeships and apprentices who have made a significant contribution to their workplaces.
