What We Do AWE

AWE has been central to the defence of the United Kingdom for more than 60 years. We provide and maintain the warheads for the country’s nuclear deterrent, Trident.

Trident is a submarine-launched, inter-continental ballistic nuclear missile weapons system, carried by Royal Navy Vanguard-class submarines. Our role at AWE is to manufacture and sustain the warheads for the Trident system, ensuring optimum safety and performance, but also to maintain a capability to produce a successor system should the Government require one in the future.

Our work at AWE covers the entire life cycle of nuclear warheads; from initial concept, assessment and design, through to component manufacture and assembly, in-service support, and finally decommissioning and disposal.

In July 2012 The ABL Alliance of AWE plc, Babcock Marine (Clyde) Ltd and Lockheed Martin UK Strategic Systems Ltd, was awarded a 15 year contract by the Ministry of Defence (MOD), to manage strategic weapons services at the Royal Naval Armament Depot at Coulport.

The scientists, engineers and business specialists employed by AWE are world renowned. Achieving and maintaining the very highest standards in everything we do.

Working together to keep our world safe and secure, we deliver warheads for the UK’s deterrent, and use our nuclear expertise to support national security.

What we do is unique, and so are the people that work at AWE. We are proud of the crucial role we play in defending the UK, but we are also proud of the way we do business and the environment we are
working to create.
