To ensure AWE maintains a safe and secure working environment and remains a good neighbour, AWE directly employs a dedicated fire and ambulance service.
AWE has fire stations on both the Aldermaston and Burghfield sites, which operate 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Each station has four working shifts as well as a small day-only watch. The fire service also provides ambulance technicians and provides occasional emergency support to the local emergency services.
Overall leadership is provided by the Chief Fire Officer, while each watch typically consists of a Watch Manager, Crew Managers and Firefighters.
AWE Firefighters undergo training similar to that of the County Fire Service, in addition to specific training related to working on a Nuclear Licensed Site. There is a clear pay and progression arrangement at AWE for its fire service and we provide all the necessary support and assistance to help our people develop their careers.
