These case studies give you a flavour of starting a career as a Front Line Worker...
David – Front Line Worker - Health Physics Surveyor (Joined January 2006)
"The training since I joined has been extensive. The initial induction lasted six weeks and covered general issues such as security awareness and health & safety as well as role-specific training. That was followed by work experience to give me a good introduction to the areas where I’d be based and the people I’d be working with. I’m now also doing a day release college course to earn my City & Guilds Radiation Safety Certificate.
I’m about to finish training so will shortly be starting the role proper of a Health Physics Surveyor. That will involve things like routine daily surveys, taking air samples, item clearance and carrying out more specialised work that requires the wearing of respirators and other protective equipment. On-site emergency exercises are also an important part of our regular work in this team. I’ve learnt a huge amount since I joined and I’m now looking forward to continuing to develop my skills as fully-fledged member of the team."
Jean - Front Line Worker (Joined March 2006)
"I work in the Research and Development Directorate where it’s my job to support the scientific staff on a wide range of projects. It’s rewarding to work with people who are some of the leading people in their fields and the work is extremely varied, which keeps things interesting.
There’s a lot to learn, of course – with any job you have to get used to the processes and the way of doing things. But the training’s been excellent and I’ve been given all the help I need to get the job done. On top of that, the other benefits are a good salary and AWE offers an excellent pension scheme."
