Recreation @ AWE AWE

At AWE we take sport, fitness and leisure seriously.

The Recreational Society, or the Rec Soc as it’s known by many at AWE, has been established for over 50 years. It was originally set up to boost team spirit and provide recreational and sporting facilities for staff – which it still does to this day.

Situated within the perimeter fence of AWE’s Aldermaston site, but outside the main security fence, the Rec Soc has strong links with AWE but remains a stand-alone business.

Membership of the Rec Soc is open to all AWE staff, their families, and AWE contractors. However, non-members are able to take advantage of some facilities.

In addition to 16 acres of playing fields (including rugby, football and cricket fields), the Rec Soc offers a recreational complex containing a traditional gymnasium, squash courts, a theatre, and small function rooms. Also contained within the Rec Soc grounds is a fully licensed club house with two bars, dining facilities, skittle alley, snooker & pool tables, and Sky TV. Ample parking is available.

A wide range of activities operate via the Rec Soc, including:
Amateur Dramatics, Angling, Athletics, Badminton, Book Club, Bowls, Bridge, Chess, Cricket, Croquet, Diving, Football, Games, Golf, Judo, Motor Club, Rifle & Pistol, Rugby, Scottish Dancing, Skittles, Squash, Table Tennis, Tennis, and Weight Training.

William Penney Theatre
Within the Rec Soc complex is the William Penney Theatre, which has an audience capacity of 280. The resident amateur dramatics company, The Boundary Players, aim to put on at least three productions per season, including a balance of comedies, farce, thrillers and serious plays. An infrared hearing loop has recently been installed in the theatre for the benefit of hearing aid users, and disabled access is provided. Visit for more details.
