AWE is the only organisation of its kind in the UK.
It covers the whole nuclear lifecycle, from research and design through to manufacture, support and eventual decommissioning. The warheads we produce and maintain have been providing the UK with a credible nuclear deterrent since 1950, a deterrent that is still a vital part of our nation’s defence strategy.
AWE is also unique because, as well as striving to be world leaders in the nuclear industry, we share the benefit of our technological and scientific expertise in the wider commercial and medical fields. For instance, we developed a method of moulding one of the hardest substances in the world, which is now being used to make the protective clothing worn by some of the UK’s police and security forces. We also helped a Formula 1 team establish how its cars would perform in different climates. So working at AWE could means you’ll be using your skills in a much wider field than you might have thought possible.
It’s also a unique place to learn - you’ll be gaining new skills all the time. Our commitment to building close links with universities and sharing our expertise with academic and commercial bodies worldwide will keep us – and you – at the forefront of developing technologies.
