The Atomic Weapons Establishment is unique because we are responsible for the safe development and maintenance of the nation’s nuclear deterrent. It’s a role that’s made us one of the UK’s largest high technology research, development and production facilities. We’re also recognised as an international centre of scientific, engineering and technological excellence.
Our work spans the entire lifecycle of nuclear warheads, from research, design and development to manufacture, assembly, in-service support, decommissioning and, ultimately, disposal. We also use our specialist knowledge to support the wider UK National Security Programme.
Spread across two main sites, we employ a range of scientists, engineers and skilled craftspeople. We also have all the support functions such as HR, finance, security, quality, environmental management, safety and health you’d expect in an organisation of this size. In addition to that, our graduate programme and award-winning Apprenticeship programmes are giving hundreds of people a year the best possible starts in their careers.
