Supporting TeenTech

As a regional sponsor and board member AWE plays a key role in supporting the Hampshire TeenTech event, which attracts over 300 teenagers. Teams of AWE scientists and engineers attend the Basingstoke based event - delivering engaging interactive science activities and running an engineering challenge.

The TeenTech initiative was founded by former Tomorrow’s World Presenter Maggie Philbin and now includes 12 regional events. The Hampshire event is delivered by educational charity Basingstoke Consortium, which AWE also works closely with on a series of other initiatives.

It is also a great opportunity for the students and their teachers to chat to our experts and find out more about the fantastic training opportunities available to young people at AWE. These cut across a whole range of science and engineering disciplines and include award winning apprenticeship and graduate programmes.

TeenTech founder, Maggie Philbin says:

“AWE graduates and apprentices build and lead engaging, hands on activities so that teenagers understand the personal qualities as well as the academic requirements they need".

 Annually the Hampshire event welcomes up to 30 schools from across North Hampshire and West Berkshire. Winners of the AWE challenge at the event receive a unique prize which can’t be bought - an opportunity to visit AWE’s state of the art Orion laser facility.

AWE Chief Scientist, Professor Andrew Randewich, was among the experts visiting the latest event. He said;

“TeenTech is a fantastic event and I am delighted to be playing my part in promoting AWE’s commitment to the national STEM agenda and inspiring future generations. It’s hugely satisfying to know that events like these are truly informative in the choices students have to make – which will hopefully lead to them having successful careers in science and engineering.”

For more details about TeenTech and how to get your school involved visit the TeenTech website or if you’re local to North Hampshire and want to get involved with the Basingstoke event get in touch with the Basingstoke Consortium who deliver that event on TeenTech’s behalf.
