Safety and emergency planning

We take our responsibility for safety on site and in the local community very seriously. We have robust procedures that are fully engrained into every activity we undertake to ensure we operate in a safe manner. Part of this focus on safety is our commitment to ensure that we maintain high quality emergency response capability that can step into action any day, any time.

The emergency response team is highly trained and links, when necessary, to external emergency bodies including the police, NHS, national and local government.

What to do in an emergency

We care about the environment and people in the neighbourhoods around our sites and take steps to communicate regularly with people, businesses and other stakeholders on a variety of matters, including emergency procedures.

Information is provided regularly to give guidance and instructions about what to do in the very unlikely event of a serious incident on one of our sites.

Our information booklet explains what to do if a serious incident occurs.

Radiation safety

The way we operate is regulated by numerous bodies including the Office for Nuclear Regulation and the Health and Safety Executive. To meet these standards we have very rigorous safety measures in place that mean that even the staff who work with radioactive substances are exposed to the smallest amounts of radiation, far lower in fact than many of us experience in everyday life.

Click here for facts and figures showing some examples of common radiation doses compared to AWE dose limits. Our information booklet gives more guidance about radiation levels and what to do if an incident occurs.
