Waste

You are here : Safety & The Environment >> The Environment
In common with the rest of the nuclear industry and certain hospitals, AWE produces some radioactive waste as a result of our operations. However, we have steadily reduced the amount of waste we generate, and ensure that what remains is disposed of safely and within legal guidelines.
We are permitted to discharge very low levels of treated radioactive waste, in liquid or gaseous form. This is regulated by the Environment Agency and must remain within strict limits.
We have successfully kept discharges to a fraction of permitted limits and continue to steadily reduce them – they are now of such a low level that they are barely detectable. Find out more by viewing the Environmental & Discharges Monitoring reports in our Publications section.
