The Radiation Science team at AWE holds responsibility for Hardness & Vulnerability activities. The team consists of scientists and engineers with appropriate specialist theoretical knowledge, modelling and experimental competencies.
Neutron Irradiation Services
AWE has two facilities for neutron irradiation: the VIPER reactor and the D-T ASP Accelerator.
The VIPER reactor provides threat level fission spectrum neutron pulses, and is accompanied by technical advice in conducting trials in ‘full threat’ environments.
The ASP Accelerator can provide pulsed or steady beams 14MeV and 3MeV neutrons as well as alphas. Furthermore, ASP is a secondary calibration source traceable to NPL national standards.

We are able to support military and commercial applications such as:
- Neutron Activation Analysis
- Simulation of criticality excursions
- Simulation (neutron effects) of nuclear weapon detonation on small to large components, subassemblies and systems
- Calibration of neutron detectors and dosimetry
- Support to material ageing studies in radiation environments includes: organics, fissile, metallics, memory alloys and other materials
- Neutron radiography (capability developing)
AWE can provide a broad range of irradiation services besides those above. Teams of specialists from a range of disciplines support the activities of the VIPER/ASP team at AWE.
