AWE’s Technical Outreach programme is at the core of developing our relationship with the UK’s science, engineering and technology community.
Through our links with institutions such universities, professional bodies and government agencies, we can build upon and share knowledge for mutual benefit.
Our Technical Outreach mission is ‘To engage with the UK’s science, engineering & technology community in order to add value to AWE's programmes, and to enable AWE to meet its Mission in the most effective way’. Our Outreach vision is ‘To be the UK’s science, engineering & technology community's first choice as a technical collaborator and employer’.
In order to achieve these goals, we are increasingly developing a portfolio of external interactions. These include…
Strategic alliance partnerships & academic interactions
We have formed strong links with the country’s universities to address AWE's future research and development requirements through studentships, fellowships and project sponsorship. AWE currently has technical contracts with around 30 universities in the UK, including Heriot-Watt University, Cranfield University and Cambridge University.
Professional institutions
AWE is actively building relationships with the professional institutions. Over 20 professional bodies and institutions are represented at AWE through various corporate and individual staff memberships, and our training programmes are accredited by the IMechE, IET, IoM3, RSC & IoP.
Government agencies
Apart from our prime relationship with our customer, the Ministry of Defence, we engage in specific interactions with various other government departments, including DSTL and the Research Councils such as EPSRC and LFRC.
National laboratories
We have developed and continue to build important links with the National Physical Laboratory, and the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory.
Industry
Outreach aims to develop a positive reputation for AWE within industry and commerce. We’ve initiated numerous industrial interactions, including involvement with Partnership Sourcing Ltd (CBI/Dti organisation) to identify and implement best practice in business partnering.
Education
We contribute towards various aspects of nuclear education, through sponsorship of the Physics & Technology of Nuclear Reactors & Radioactive Waste Management & Decommissioning courses at Birmingham University, through contributing to NTEC initiative, and through membership of the nationally based Nuclear Academic Industry Liaison Seminar.
