MAY 2010 - AWE SUPPORTING THE COMMUNITY AT THE NEWBURY SPRING FESTIVAL

For two weeks in the spring Newbury plays host to a range of top flight musicians, and AWE was happy to sponsor one of the many exciting events.

This is the third year that AWE has assisted through sponsoring an event at the spring festival, and this time it was a workshop given by percussion quartet 4-MALITY, followed by an evening concert.

4-MALITY was formed by Adrian Spillett, the first percussionist to win the prestigious BBC Young Musicians Competition. Their artists have more than 80 drums, gongs, cymbals and tuned percussion. The music and performance was visually spectacular as well as physically demanding.

More than 400 youngsters took part in the workshop and enjoyed seeing and hearing how the different instruments were used.

Lindsey Appleton, AWE’s Public Affairs Manager, said: “4-MALITY were great and the children really enjoyed the afternoon. Their aim was to foster an interest in percussion instruments, and I think they more than succeeded in doing this.

“We are always happy to help support the Newbury Spring Festival, as we enjoy working closely with local communities, and this is a way to give people the opportunity to have access to world class music events.”
