Ben,  Precision Machinist

How long have you worked at AWE?
Since September 2018

Why did you choose AWE?
AWE was somewhere that would allow me to build upon my skills while putting them into practice. My choice was mainly inspired by my Dad who had done the same apprenticeship as me at the same age.

Why did you choose to do an apprenticeship over other career routes?
I did not want to stay in education as I found school uninspiring and needed a new place to start a new chapter in my life. I am not one for exams and the educational route through college with assignments really appealed to me.

Tell us about your time at AWE? What do you do?
Since being on the apprenticeship, I have had the opportunity to begin working in the Skills Academy and then move out to spend three months in the main workshop, working on common materials as well as CNC Machines. After that, I was fortunate enough to spend seven months with the Engineering Trials team working on small one-off jobs and helping out with all sorts of different assembly tasks.
From July 2019 to January 2022, I was the Chairperson of the Aldermaston Apprentice Association where we organised different events, charity fundraisers and generally helped with apprentice issues.

What’s the best thing about your job?
Some of the best things about my job would have to be the 9-day fortnight and the great pay. I have also been lucky enough to be involved with lots of exciting projects.

How do you see your career progressing?
I would love to be able to gain my Level 4 once I have completed my apprenticeship, as well as getting more involved in the 3D Printing areas on site. I would also like to be able to climb the managerial ladder and improve my skills in that area.

What advice would you give to someone thinking about joining an AWE apprenticeship?
Don’t hesitate! It is an awesome place to work with so many opportunities and every day is an adventure. There is a really good support framework, and everyone is always happy to help.
