Why did you choose AWE?- what attracted you?
The opportunity to undertake placements as part of the Evolve Graduate Scheme attracted me to choose AWE. I thought that these placements would allow me to explore a broad variety of groups across the company and provide me with an opportunity to apply and expand on the skills and knowledge gained during my Physics degree. Having recently started at AWE I have found that the Evolve Graduate Scheme has exceeded my expectations because of the variety of opportunities, extensive support, and interesting work provided.
Tell us about your time at AWE?- What do you do?
When I joined AWE, I started working on an introductory placement for 3 months, which involved collaborating in groups with other graduates to conduct a couple of investigations of varying classifications. I am currently working in my first scientific placement, which is within the Physics function. On a day-to-day basis my placement work involves utilising existing coding skills, learning new code, and producing reports and presentations.
What’s the best thing about working in the STEM industry?
One of the best things about working within the STEM industry is the broad range and cutting-edge nature of the research and work being conducted. The STEM industry is constantly evolving, and it is exciting to work alongside industry experts and be directly involved in these developments.
Who inspired you to have a career in STEM?
I was inspired to pursue a career in STEM by my secondary school physics teacher, who always encouraged me to be curious, engage with scientific events, and to love the breadth and depth of knowledge that studying physics offered. The enthusiasm and passion that she always brought to her physics lessons was contagious and has always stuck with me!
How do you see your career progressing?
Although I only recently started on my career path, in 5 years’ time I would love to still be pursuing and involved in scientific work, especially within physics. I would love to have completed the Evolve Graduate Scheme and be working within one of the groups that I had undertaken a placement in.
Why are events such as British Science Week so important?
Events such as British Science Week are so important to inspire future generations to pursue STEM related subjects and careers. These events play a vital role in showcasing the variety of research and work conducted across the scientific industry, as well as highlighting the connections and collaborations between other industries and organisations.
What advice would you give to someone thinking about a career in STEM?
Always be curious, ask questions, and remember anyone can pursue a career in STEM!
