Jesamy, Laboratory Technician

How long have you worked at AWE?
Just over 2 years.

Tell us about your time at AWE?
I have had the opportunity to work in a lot of projects and buildings at my time at AWE. I have worked with the Orion laser which is the largest laser in the UK. I have had the experience of working the executive team, mayors, the scientific chief advisor for the country and VIPs with high profile physics background. A typical day for me could not be described easily. My work has always been very varied and almost every day is different. The only thing that remains the same is the exciting work that can’t be done anywhere else.

Why did you choose AWE for your apprenticeship?
I didn’t want to go to university as this would have given me debt, but not a guaranteed chance of a job.  I knew I wanted to get further qualifications, so an apprenticeship was the obvious choice for me. I wanted a career in STEM as they were my favourite subjects at school. I went onto notgoingtouni.com and found two opportunities near me. I applied for both, however when I found out more about the work at AWE it interested me the most, so it was an obvious choice for me. I had no expectations as I hadn’t worked in an environment like this before and didn’t know if the work that would suit me but if anything, it exceeded my expectations.  I originally applied for a chemistry apprenticeship and then decided to change over to a physics – which I felt was a huge risk but I’m very glad I changed over as the work is much more interesting to me.

What’s the best thing about your job?
The best thing about my job are the opportunities I have been given that I never wouldn’t get anywhere else. It’s been very good for me because I have met a variety of people and been able to go to different places to promote the company, STEM careers and women in STEM such as Sandhurst military academy and the University of Cambridge.
I was recognised for the work at the University of Cambridge following two competitions judged by teachers and pupils, of which we came first and second respectively. The team were awarded an AWE bronze award which is recognised in the company and awarded by the CEO.
I am on a bright career path and have completed my BTEC and my apprenticeship. I have also had the opportunity to work on some major projects and being able to see the interesting varied work that goes on is very rewarding and exciting for me.

What are the benefits?
A massive benefit is the 9-day fortnight which gives great work-life balance. Another benefit for me is the career development as I can be given a chance to go to university and develop my skills further for my job role. I have been given the chance to join the Institute of Physics and in turn apply to be a registered science technician which is a recognised title. I have been able to work in a variety of science which has developed my skills and experience.  I have also had a lot of personal development and have become a lot more confident.

How do you see your career progressing?
In 5 years, I would like to be trained as a trials conducting officer in the hydrodynamics area carrying out trials which help in understand the science of explosives. From here I would like to do a degree for ordinance, munitions and explosives, which would develop my knowledge in this field and open further pathways for my career.

What advice would you give to someone thinking about joining AWE apprenticeship scheme?
Stick with it and use your mentors and supervisors for support to help you find your feet within the business.
