How long have you worked at AWE?
I have worked at AWE for 11 months

What did you study at university?
I studied Chemistry.

Why did you choose AWE?
I liked the idea of working in such a unique environment and the possibility of gaining experience in a niche and specialised field of science.

Tell us about your time at AWE?
Since joining AWE, I have mainly been working within the metals department, working alongside both analytical scientists and metallurgists. I have spent most of my time analysing metals for their suitability for use around the company, as well as learning how to prepare metal samples for surface analysis, which is something completely new for me.

What was your first impression of AWE?
My first impression of AWE was very good. I knew from my first day that I was going to enjoy working here because everyone was so friendly.

What are the benefits of AWE?
There are plenty of benefits of working at AWE for both your career progression as well as your life outside of work. The pay here is very good, there is a generous holiday allowance and we work a 9-day fortnight. Career progression and professional development is a key part of AWE, with the company paying for a professional body membership as well as senior members of staff who dedicate time to mentoring you throughout your time here.

What do you most enjoy about your current role?
The thing I enjoy most about my current role is the flexibility. Being on the graduate scheme gives you to the opportunity to experience multiple different roles and departments within the business. This enables you to not only broaden the knowledge and skills you’ve already gained but also to find the job you enjoy the most.

How do you see your career progressing?
In the next five years I would like to be a Chartered Chemist with the Royal Society of Chemistry. Beyond this, I would like to develop my skills as an analytical chemist in the metals group here at AWE and become a competent scientist at several analytical methods undertaken within my team.

What advice would you give to someone who is thinking about joining the AWE graduate programme?
My biggest piece of advice would be to go for it. The skills and breadth of knowledge you will gain from the graduate scheme will be valuable throughout your career, whether you decide to stay at AWE or broaden your horizons. If you join the graduate scheme here at AWE, grab everything that comes your way with both hands and make the most of the opportunities presented to you.
