Supporting National Science Week

AWE Plasma physicist  Dr Matthew Hill responded to an enquiry from a local primary school by going out and meeting the pupils face to face about his work with lasers.

Pupils at the North Waltham primary School near Basingstoke were delighted to welcome Dr Hill to their weekly science club. Dr Hill has been at  AWE for 8 years, designing high power laser experiments and the specialist equipment we use to diagnose them. He said ‘Space exploration and astrophysics have been a real passion of mine for as long as I can remember, and motivated me to do a physics degree at the University of Sussex and then a PhD at the University of Leeds.  I know that the work we do helps to keep our country safe and gives me a sense of purpose in addition to all the amazing science’.

One of the pupils at the club said: 

We were all so excited to meet Dr Hill and find out how more about his interesting work.  I know 100% I want to be a scientist”.

More activities will take place later in the week  helping to inspire young learners to follow careers in Science
