AWE scientist, Kirk Duroe has been recognised with the 2020 Clifford Paterson medal and prize from the renowned Institute of Physics. Kirk’s award is a Bronze Early Career medal which recognises exceptional physicists in the early stages of their careers.
The Institute of Physics’ medal was in recognition of Kirk’s expert technical advice to the government. Kirk was viewed as an outstanding contributor to UK nuclear threat reduction scientific research and development, with his work directly supporting the UK Home Office.
As technical lead Kirk has worked closely with UK government policymakers and his contribution has been recognised and shared with several US laboratories working in Department of Homeland Security programmes.
Kirk, who joined AWE as a physics graduate in 2011, said: “It is an honour to receive this award and be recognised by the Institute of Physics in this way. I have thoroughly enjoyed collaborating with different colleagues and organisations within my work and seeing the positive outcomes that have stemmed from it.”

The Institute of Physics gave special mention to Kirk’s communication skills and strong capacity to analyse complex data and technology.
