Double first for AWE graduate apprentice

It’s a double achievement for one AWE apprentice, as not only was Liam Jones our first degree apprentice, but he has also graduated with first class honours.

Liam became AWE’s first degree apprentice in 2018, studying for a BSc in Nuclear Engineering. Over the next four years, in addition to studying at AWE’s apprentice academy and building his knowledge through placements, Liam also studied at the National College for Nuclear at Bridgwater College, resulting in his recent graduation with top honours.

This blended approach to learning allows students to achieve a degree, whilst building their skills and knowledge through AWE’s award-winning apprenticeship scheme, but without tuition fees. It also ensures that AWE can develop the future talent needed for its unique mission of supporting the defence and security of the UK.

Head of AWE’s Skills Academy, Marcus Hutchings explains: “The recruitment market is highly competitive, and we must do all we can to develop the skills needed to deliver our mission. It’s great to see our degree apprenticeships reaping such positive results.  Congratulations to Liam for an outstanding achievement.”

Commenting on his success, Liam Jones, said: “Being AWE’s first Nuclear Engineering degree apprentice was daunting, but my managers supported me through my studies, and the work I’ve put in has paid off. Before starting out, I never thought that I’d be a graduate, however AWE has given me the opportunity to achieve a first-class degree with honours.”

Since Liam blazed the trail, AWE has recruited a further 18 degree apprentices, studying for a range of degrees including Civil and Manufacturing Engineering. Applications for next year’s degree apprenticeships open this September. Further details can be found at: /careers/future-careers.
