Marking 10 years of physics collaboration

This year marks the 10th anniversary of OxCHEDS, the Oxford Centre for High Energy Density Science, which is an AWE sponsored centre of excellence specialising in areas of physics at the University of Oxford that are vital to nuclear science and technology.

The 2024 OxCHEDS annual meeting was held earlier in the year during which a rich and diverse programme of technical presentations were given at Lady Margaret Hall that showcased an array of high-energy-density physics – undertaken as part of AWE’s collaboration with OxCHEDS over the last 10 years.

OxCHEDS Director, University of Oxford, Professor Justin Wark, said:

“OxCHEDS has come a long way in 10 years. It is inspiring to see what has been achieved, and how our interactions are working to the benefit of not only Oxford physics and AWE, but also the wider community. It was a pleasure to welcome the Oxford Physics Head of Department, Professor Ian Shipsey, to our celebratory dinner, and to hear him speak in such passionate tones about his support for our continued endeavours. Equally encouraging words from Andrew Randewich [AWE Executive Director Science] and Rob Lock [AWE Chief Scientist] served to further illustrate how fruitful these interactions have been. We look forward to the next decade!”

The meeting was an opportunity not only to share and reflect on the latest scientific research by OxCHEDS, but to also celebrate its longevity and discuss future opportunities.

AWE Lead for OxCHEDS, Colin Danson, said:

“Academic interactions are a cornerstone of AWE’s external collaborations. OxCHEDS is an exemplar of these engagements. During the 10 years of its existence AWE has co-sponsored 20 DPhil studentships through OxCHEDS. The productivity of the relationship is evidenced by over 20 high quality co-authored publications in the last four years. We are looking forward to this highly valued collaboration continuing well into the future.”

Further information about OxCHEDS can be found on their website.
