Materials scientist appointed Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry
We are delighted to announce that Roy Awbery has been elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry (FRSC). Fellowship is conferred following peer review by senior chemists from academia and industry and recognises individuals, who have demonstrated sustained leadership and significant impact on the chemical sciences and the profession.
Roy has spent much of his long and varied 38-year career at AWE in key roles across areas of national security. Roy served as Principal Technical Sponsor for Nuclear Forensics, where he led the development of the UK National Nuclear Forensic Library. His work has been recognised through the MOD Chief Scientific Adviser Awards (CSA Awards) amongst other accolades. He is currently Principal Stakeholder Manager in the External Technical Partnerships Office, focusing on building strategic partnerships with academia, industry and government to support AWE’s mission. Roy is also Honorary Professor at Bangor University’s Nuclear Futures Institute.
Recognised by the International Atomic Energy Agency as a major global event, Roy is Founder of the NuFor Conference Series, which brings together chemists, materials scientists, policy makers and security professionals working in nuclear forensics and national security to share knowledge and expertise.

It is a meaningful recognition of work conducted alongside many incredibly talented colleagues across AWE and wider. It also represents an opportunity to continue championing chemistry and materials science and inspiring others to explore the impact these disciplines can have across the defence sector.”
