Engineering Visualisation: Bringing Complex Ideas to Life

AWE’s Engineering Visualisation team has evolved significantly since its early beginnings, growing from a small virtual reality (VR) unit into a specialist capability that supports projects across the business.

Originally established in 2001 as a two-person VR team, the group has expanded to a team of 10 experts, reflecting both the increasing demand for their work and the wider applications of their technology. Today, their new name ‘Engineering Visualisation’, better represents the breadth of their expertise beyond virtual reality alone.

Transforming how we visualise and understand engineering

At the heart of the team’s work is the ability to turn complex engineering data into accessible, interactive experiences.

One of their key tools called ‘Explore’, allows users to generate interactive 3D models from CAD data. What previously took months can now be achieved in a single day, enabling teams to quickly visualise designs and communicate ideas more effectively. These models can be used for presentations, learning materials, or detailed analysis of individual components.

This capability supports better decision-making by making technical information easier to understand for a wider range of stakeholders.

Immersive training and realistic simulation

The team also plays a vital role in delivering innovative training solutions.

Using their ‘Exercise’ application, they create bespoke training environments where every detail, from equipment to surroundings, is modelled in-house to closely reflect real-world conditions.

These simulations allow users to practise skills, identify hazards, and build confidence in a safe, controlled environment.

In addition, their ‘Assembly’ tool enables hands-on virtual training, allowing colleagues to practise using tools, equipment and processes without the need for physical resources. This approach not only enhances learning but also offers significant efficiencies compared with traditional training methods.

Supporting innovation across AWE

Beyond training and visualisation, Engineering Visualisation supports a wide range of projects across AWE.

Their work includes creating virtual environments using advanced tools, helping teams understand how spaces and designs will look and function before they are built. They also collaborate with other specialist teams to capture real-world environments and turn them into accurate digital models.

These capabilities are helping to improve collaboration, enhance understanding, and support the delivery of complex programmes across the organisation.

Looking ahead

As AWE continues to invest in future capabilities, the Engineering Visualisation team is playing an increasingly important role in enabling innovation.

By combining cutting-edge technology with creative expertise, they are helping colleagues explore ideas, improve training, and bring complex concepts to life in new and impactful ways.
