Nuclear Forensics UK-US Collaboration

AWE’s Nuclear Threat Reduction programme works closely with colleagues in the United States, a long-standing international partnership dedicated to strengthening global nuclear security.

A long-standing partnership

The collaboration brings together experts from both nations to develop, maintain, test and enhance capabilities. By combining expertise, sharing knowledge and conducting joint exercises, the partnership helps ensure both countries remain prepared to respond to emerging nuclear security threats.

Sharing expertise through a joint endeavour

Each year, specialists gather for collaborative meetings to share best practice and explore future opportunities for collaboration. AWE hosted the latest annual UK-US meeting, bringing together leading scientists, technical specialists and government representatives from both nations.

Reflecting on the partnership, the Ministry of Defence’s Co-Chair said:

“This is a truly collaborative exchange, with both nations working towards a common goal. These teams are at the leading edge of science applied to nuclear forensics, and the exercises and peer reviews provide high confidence in the readiness of both nations to counter the threat of nuclear terrorism.”

Supporting global nuclear security

With the sessions concluded, participants returned to their organisations with new insights, strengthened relationships and a shared commitment to advancing nuclear forensics capabilities. The discussions and collaboration will help shape another year of joint activity in support of UK, US and global security. Planning is already underway for the next collaboration in the United States, reflecting the enduring commitment of both nations to work together to deter and counter some of the world’s most complex nuclear security threats.
