As a Radiochemistry undergraduate student you will have the opportunity to work with world-class scientists who provide a range of analytical capabilities and expert advice to the wider business, government agencies and external customers.

You’ll also make sure we meet our regulatory and license conditions which is incredibly important in the industry we operate in.

The opportunity

Dosimetry

Help protect people and workplaces through radiation monitoring and analysis.

This placement offers the opportunity to apply scientific and analytical skills in a laboratory environment while contributing to the safety and wellbeing of employees working in highly regulated settings.

You’ll join our Internal Dosimetry Services Team, which helps assess potential exposure to radioactive materials by analysing biological and workplace monitoring samples. The team’s work plays an important role in ensuring regulatory compliance and supporting the accurate assessment and recording of radiation doses.

During your placement, you could:

  • Support the analysis of biological and workplace monitoring samples used to assess potential internal exposure to radioactive materials.
  • Learn how radiation protection programmes help keep people safe and support regulatory requirements.
  • Gain hands-on experience using specialist laboratory equipment, including liquid scintillation counters, alpha spectrometers, and high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) systems.
  • Develop practical laboratory skills using a range of equipment, including furnaces, analytical balances, centrifuges, pipettes, fume cupboards, and hot plates.
  • Assist with sample preparation, testing, data analysis, and reporting.
  • Work alongside experienced scientists and radiation protection specialists to understand how scientific data informs safety decisions.

This placement is ideal for students with an interest in laboratory science, analytical techniques, and applying scientific knowledge to real-world challenges.

You’ll develop valuable technical and analytical skills while contributing to work that helps maintain high standards of safety and regulatory compliance.

Radiometrology

Use science, data, and technology to measure and better understand radioactive materials.

Radiometrology is the science of accurately measuring radioactive materials and radiation. The work carried out by this team provides critical data that supports safety, operational decision-making, and compliance across a wide range of programmes.

This placement offers the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in a laboratory environment while developing practical skills in measurement science, data analysis, and problem solving.

During your placement, you could:

  • Carry out measurements using techniques such as gamma spectroscopy, liquid scintillation counting, and alpha spectroscopy.
  • Analyse and interpret scientific data to support technical investigations and decision-making.
  • Explore opportunities to develop coding and modelling skills to support data analysis and scientific research.
  • Learn how measurement science supports safety, operational performance, and regulatory requirements.
  • Work closely with colleagues across multiple scientific and technical disciplines, gaining experience of multidisciplinary teamwork.
  • Develop an understanding of how specialist scientific work contributes to wider organisational and government objectives.

No prior experience in these techniques is required, as full training will be provided. We’re looking for curious, enthusiastic students who enjoy solving problems, working with data, and applying science in a practical environment.

This is an excellent opportunity to build laboratory experience, develop technical expertise, and gain insight into how scientific measurement supports critical national missions.
