Dr Dominic Jones
Executive Director Science
Dominic is the Executive Director Science at AWE and is responsible for AWE’s scientific community. He leads the Science function and the operation of the two Science Business Units – Nuclear Threat Reduction and Science Laboratories – who provide the critical science capability and expertise to deliver and support our key mission outputs.
Prior to taking up this role in May 2026, Dominic was the Executive Director for Safety, Security, Sustainability, Health, Environment and Quality (SHEQ). In this role, he was responsible for developing and deploying effective Company policies, strategies and processes to maintain AWE’s Licence to Operate and safely and securely deliver the Company’s requirements. He was also chair of AWE’s Nuclear Safety Committee.
Dominic has a scientific background in nuclear chemistry and a deep understanding of AWE operations. He previously led Nuclear Threat Reduction at AWE, where he supported several national and international events and continues to represent AWE as a scientific advisor to Government. Dominic also led the transition of AWE to become an Arm’s Length Body within the Ministry of Defence in 2021.
Dominic joined AWE in 2007 and became the Head of Radiation Protection (Corporate RPA) in 2009. During this time, he also provided technical input to the UK response to the Fukushima incident in Japan and acted as a technical advisor to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) for expert missions overseas.
Prior to joining AWE, Dominic worked for Dstl and as a consultant on waste management and decommissioning projects within the civil nuclear industry.
Dominic is married and lives in Hampshire with his family.
