Professor Andrew Randewich CBE FREng

AWE Chief Research Officer

As Chief Research Officer, Andrew has accountability for the nuclear weapon science that underpins the UK’s enduring national capability and for leading AWE’s technical partnerships with international allies, academia, government and other UK laboratories. The CRO also provides review of AWE capability. The role is thus focussed on influencing and safeguarding the UK’s scientific edge and shaping the long-term research that underpins our future. The AWE Chief Scientist reports into the Chief Research Officer.

Andrew was appointed to the Executive Committee in June 2020, and his previous roles include Exec Director Science, Exec Director Engineering and Science, Director SET, Head of Physics, Chief Scientist and Head of Plasma Physics. Andrew has previously had accountability for the largest secure supercomputers in the UK and for the Orion laser, one of the largest science capital investments ever made in the UK.

Andrew joined AWE in 1997 where he worked on physics assessment, mathematical modelling, code development, and research on space and DT fusion plasmas.

Andrew is also a Chartered Physicist, a Chartered Engineer, and a Fellow of the Institute of Physics. He is married and has two grown up children.
