The opportunity

Nuclear Threat Reduction (Data Science)

Use data science to help tackle complex national security challenges.

Our Nuclear Threat Reduction (NTR) teams support the UK Government on a wide range of issues relating to nuclear and radiological security. Their work spans everything from innovative scientific research to the development of new technologies, helping to improve the detection, analysis, and understanding of nuclear and radiological materials.

This placement offers an exciting opportunity to apply data science and analytical techniques to real-world challenges. You’ll work with large and complex datasets collected through a range of scientific methods, helping to turn data into meaningful insights that support critical decision-making.

What you’ll learn

PROJECT WORK | STAKEHOLDER ENGAGEMENT | DATA SCIENCE

During your placement, you could:

  • Apply data science, statistical, and analytical techniques to support scientific research and development projects.
  • Work with large, complex datasets generated from a range of scientific disciplines and technologies.
  • Help identify patterns, trends, and insights that improve our understanding of technical and operational challenges.
  • Support the development of data-driven tools, models, and visualisations to aid analysis and decision-making.
  • Collaborate with scientists, engineers, and technical specialists to solve multidisciplinary problems.
  • Gain experience of how data analysis supports areas such as material detection, scientific monitoring, technology development, and research programmes.
  • Contribute to projects that combine science, technology, and data to address important national security challenges.

You’ll be part of a multidisciplinary team, gaining hands-on experience applying data science techniques in a research and innovation environment. Along the way, you’ll build valuable skills in data analysis, problem-solving, collaboration, and technical communication.

This is an excellent opportunity for curious and analytical individuals who enjoy working with data, solving complex problems, and applying their skills to projects with real-world impact.
