Operations is where the action happens at AWE with our team playing a pivotal role in the delivery of our mission.
You’ll be joining the team that plays an integral part in building the UK’s nuclear deterrent, from precision parts to warhead assembly.
Working on our customer programmes, the team delivers the products and services needed to fulfil the needs of the Defence Nuclear Organisation (DNO) in keeping the UK safe.
Our work is of the highest national security so you must be a British Citizen to apply.
THE QUALIFICATIONS YOU’LL NEED
All degrees are considered but a keen interest in manufacturing, process, planning or leadership would be useful in this area.
LOCATION: ALDERMASTON NEAR READING
You’ll be based at our Aldermaston site near Reading.
We work a nine-day fortnight. That means every other Friday off work + 270 hours of annual leave.

Operations Delivery
Help deliver the critical products and services that support the UK’s national security.
This placement offers a unique opportunity to gain insight into how a highly regulated, safety-focused manufacturing and operational environment works. You’ll join our Operations Delivery team, which plays a vital role in turning business requirements into real-world outcomes by supporting the manufacture, assembly, and delivery of essential products and services.
Working alongside experienced professionals, you’ll learn how complex operations are planned, coordinated, and delivered safely, securely, and efficiently. You’ll gain exposure to the day-to-day running of operational facilities and see first-hand how health, safety, quality, and regulatory compliance underpin everything we do.
What you’ll learn
PRODUCTION PLANNING | WORK SCHEDULING | OPERATIONS
During your placement, you could:
- Gain experience working in an operational environment and complete specialist training relevant to the role.
- Develop an understanding of how production and manufacturing facilities operate, including planning, scheduling, safety management, and regulatory compliance.
- Learn how operational teams identify and manage risks, resolve challenges, and seize opportunities to improve performance.
- Work collaboratively with teams across Engineering, Quality, Environment, Safety & Health (ESH), and Facilities to support successful delivery.
- Contribute to team performance reviews and visual management processes that help track progress and drive continuous improvement.
- Develop leadership skills by supporting team activities and learning how high-performing operational teams are managed and motivated.
- Gain an understanding of workforce planning, capability development, and how organisations ensure employees have the skills needed to succeed.
- Support the development and growth of operational staff through training and development activities.
- Experience how diverse and inclusive teams work together to solve problems and deliver results.
This placement is ideal for someone who enjoys working with people, solving problems, and understanding how large-scale operations are managed. You’ll develop valuable technical, leadership, and communication skills while contributing to work that has a direct impact on national security.
