AWE represented at major radiochemistry conference

This year saw the return of the 10th International Conference in Nuclear and Radiochemistry (NRC10) at which AWE showcased its expertise in radiochemistry and nuclear research to a delegation of over 340 participants from both the UK and EU.

Hosted by the Royal Society of Chemistry, the five-day conference delivered 80 presentations and 150 scientific posters covering all aspects of radiochemistry and wider nuclear research – of interest to AWE’s mission. Topics included the impact of radiation within the environment, new approaches to nuclear medicine and isotope production, nuclear forensics and the concept of a Geological Disposal Facility (GDF) in the UK.

The conference also discussed and debated the development of new analytical tools and techniques to help scientists study and investigate radiochemical processes using more efficient methods.

AWE materials and analytical scientist, Matthew Higginson, gave a presentation on how materials age and behave over time and the importance of nuclear forensics in safeguarding national security.

Matthew said: “It was a fantastic opportunity and great privilege to represent AWE at such a prestigious forum, joined by a number of my AWE colleagues, where we could discuss key issues that are important to the radiochemistry community and our mission.

“The conference confirmed our place and reputation at the heart of radiochemistry research in the UK.”

AWE looks forward to the next event expected to take place in 2028.
