AWE marks 75 years with futuristic school art competition to inspire the next generation of scientists and engineers

Young imaginations took centre stage as local primary school children showcased their vision of the future in a special art competition to celebrate AWE’s 75th anniversary.

AWE invited local primary school students to imagine what future scientists and engineers might look like in 75 years’ time and had an overwhelming response of 800 entries.

From colourful portraits of pioneering scientists and engineers with robotic limbs and floating lab coats, to creative glimpses of what laboratories and gravity-defying gadgets might look like in the future, the students’ captured both the company’s proud history and its exciting journey ahead.

AWE’s competition judges had the difficult task of narrowing the entries down to twelve finalists, with the winner finally chosen by employee vote.

Year 5 student, Caitlyn from Brimpton Primary School was crowned the competition winner with her futuristic flair and inspired artwork featuring, ‘shoes that make you walk on water’ and ‘night vision goggles’—a brilliant blend of science fiction and scientific possibility.

Caitlyn received a framed copy of her artwork and a winner’s certificate at a surprise ‘who won it’ assembly at the school presented by Sam Earl and Katie Davidson from AWE’s Community and Schools’ team. Caitlyn said that she was, ‘shocked to be the winner of the competition but felt really proud to have won.’

Brimpton Primary School was then treated to a spectacular science show called ‘Explosive Food’ by the Royal Institution. The show featured fiery demonstrations and thrilling experiments that had students (and teachers) on the edge of their seats – a fitting celebration of curiosity, creativity, and the power of science to inspire.

Heidi Davies, Headteacher of Brimpton Primary school, said: “What an amazing morning we had. We are so lucky – the children loved it! Everyday science was brought to life by the Royal Institution Science Show, making it engaging, fun and inspirational for the whole school.”

AWE’s Sam Earl, said: “This competition not only showcased the incredible talent of local young minds but also reinforced AWE’s commitment to engaging with the community and nurturing the next generation of scientists and engineers.”
