New non-executive director appointed to board

We are delighted to announce the appointment of Jill Hruby to our Board effective 1 January 2026. Jill brings an extraordinary depth of experience in national security, nuclear deterrence and advanced technology leadership. Most recently, she served as Under Secretary for Nuclear Security and Administrator of the National Nuclear Security Administration at the US Department of Energy, where she oversaw critical programmes modernizing the U.S. nuclear deterrent and advancing global nuclear security. Her distinguished career includes more than three decades at Sandia National Laboratories, culminating as Laboratories Director and President of Sandia Corporation. With mechanical engineering degrees from Purdue University and University of California at Berkeley, Jill has also held influential advisory roles with leading government and non governmental organisations. A recognised leader in science and engineering, she is a member of the U.S. National Academy of Engineering and holds honorary doctorates from Purdue University and Michigan State University. Her expertise in nuclear security, innovation and strategic governance will be invaluable as we advance our mission and navigate the challenges of a rapidly evolving global landscape.

Sam Laidlaw, AWE’s Chair, said:“We are thrilled to welcome Jill to our Board. Her experience in nuclear security, advanced technology and strategic governance will bring invaluable insight as we continue to strengthen our position and prepare for the future. The United States and the United Kingdom have a well-established relationship on all nuclear issues underpinned by the 1958 Mutual Defence Agreement and the 1963 Polaris Sales Agreement (as amended in 1982 for Trident). Her leadership record and commitment to innovation align perfectly with our mission.”

Jill remarked:  “I am honoured to join the Board and contribute to an organisation that plays such a vital role in shaping the future. I look forward to working with my fellow Board members to deliver strategic priorities, advance technology and help navigate the opportunities and challenges ahead.”
