Your mission

As a Nuclear Safety Case Assessor, you’ll be part of a team that tackles the big “what ifs” through analysing the risks and consequences of design, engineering and operational failures.

It’s all about understanding risk at its core and helping shape the safety strategies that protect people and the environment.

You’ll need a minimum 2:2 in Science or Engineering. We usually get applicants with a background in Nuclear Engineering, Nuclear materials, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry or Physics but we individuals who have a science or engineering degree with an interest in safety.

Our work is of the highest national security so you must be a British Citizen to apply.

Your journey

You will go on a two-year journey designed to grow your expertise across the full project lifecycle. This includes the design of new facilities, large modifications of existing facilities, production facilities, research & development facilities and decommissioning facilities.

You will be engaged in technical problem-solving, preparing detailed reports to argue and justify the tolerability of nuclear, radiological, environmental, and conventional hazards, whilst liaising with a diverse group of people at many levels within the company including operators, facility management, engineers, and regulators.

Throughout, you’ll find plenty of ways to get involved through regular events, spontaneous activities and the Recreation Society. You’ll also be assigned a buddy, a mentor and Evolve pathway lead who will help your transition into the business, provide pastoral support and work with you on your development journey.

What you’ll do

LEADERSHIP | HAZARD ASSESSMENT | ALARP | ONR

• You’ll be building the skills to assess major hazards like nuclear, radiological, chemical, explosive, and more.

• You will gain experience in the support the development of safety assessments and justifications, like Safety Lines, grounded in legislation, industry standards, and AWE’s own policies and guidance.

• Continuously develop understanding of current health and safety legislation, the ONR licensing regime and the fundamental application of the ALARP principle.

• Whilst supervised, contribute to the production and review of safety assessments, justifications.
